The new Smart Water Magazine 💧edition is out now and we're excited to share an opinion piece by Martin Hurst on rebuilding trust in the water sector. In this article, Martin argues that the UK water sector faces a profound crisis of public trust that challenges governance and leadership in regulated utilities. This crisis extends beyond regulation to the fundamental balance between private profit and public good in essential services. Government reforms focus on tougher enforcement and transparency, but deeper change in regulatory culture and industry leadership is needed. Lasting trust requires visible accountability from executives and inclusive governance involving broader societal representation. Rebuilding confidence demands cross-sector collaboration and clear political trade-offs set by government, not regulators.
