Economic pressures are reshaping Australia's annual grey nomad migration, with many caravan owners changing how they travel this winter, according to Suncorp brand CIL. Leading caravan and RV insurer CIL reports while demand for caravanning remains strong, rising fuel costs and broader cost-of-living pressures are influencing travel decisions across the country. Many travellers are choosing shorter trips, travelling shorter distances and opting for destinations closer to home. The trend comes despite another strong year for the sector. According to the Caravan Industry Association of Australia's 2026 State of Industry Report, Australians took 17.3 million caravan and camping trips and spent $12.6 billion nationally over the past year. Caravan ownership also continues to grow, with almost 938,000 registered recreational vehicles across Australia – up 4 per cent year-on-year. The findings highlight how Australians are adapting their travel habits while continuing to embrace the flexibility of the caravanning lifestyle. They also underscore the important role grey nomads and caravan travellers play in supporting regional tourism and local economies during the winter migration season. CIL Manager Michael Porter says that while travel patterns are evolving, Australians' love for caravanning and the freedom to explore Australia on their own terms remains consistent, even as they balance changing economic conditions. "Australians still love the freedom and flexibility that caravanning offers, but many people are becoming more conscious of travel costs and adjusting their plans accordingly," Mr Porter said. “Whether you’re planning a big lap around Australia or simply taking a few shorter trips this year, it’s important to make sure your caravan is appropriately insured.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gqfkq6DM #Suncorp #Caravanning #GreyNomads #TravelTrends #CostOfLiving
