Older people and kaumātua across New Zealand make a huge contribution to life in Aotearoa. The latest Business of Ageing research from the Office for Seniors - Te Tari Kaumātua reinforces what many communities already know: people aged 65+ continue to contribute through paid work, caregiving, volunteering, local involvement and the time they give to others. This includes our residents – those at Summerset Retirement Villages bring with them years of experience, deep local connections and a strong instinct to stay involved in the communities around them. That might be through Rotary, school support, local clubs, fundraising, environmental projects, church groups, JP work, mentoring, or simply being the person who keeps showing up when something needs doing. This National Volunteer Week, we’re recognising the many older New Zealanders whose contribution often happens quietly but makes a real difference. Our villages are richer for the people who call them home, and so are the communities around them.
