No surprises here — but it should still shock us. Detox and residential rehab for Welsh people remain far too low on the Welsh Government’s list of priorities. Wales reportedly had only 44 dedicated detox beds to begin with. If North Wales provision ends, that means 25 fewer beds in an already fragile system. And the proposed solution? Sending people from North Wales to Manchester. These are people who may be in alcohol or drug withdrawal, physically unwell, frightened and at real risk. Would we do this to anyone else requiring medical management? Detox is not a luxury. Rehab is not an optional extra. For some people, it is the difference between life and death. Wales needs protected detox and rehab capacity, transparent national reporting, and a clear pathway from assessment to funded placement. People cannot recover from services they cannot access #rehab #detox #welshgovernment
