𝐆𝐄𝐁 📚 This weekend, I will complete the last few pages of Hofstadter’s classic book named:,Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid. GEB…is how the book is known. Written by cognitive scientist Douglas Hofstadter and awarded the 1980 Pulitzer Prize, the book is one of the most influential works on intelligence, consciousness, mathematics & the human mind. I picked it up because any serious discussion about Artificial Intelligence would circle back to this book. But who are Godel, Esche & Bach ? The combination is extraordinary. Godel was an Austrian mathematician whose famous work is “Incompleteness Theorem”which cannot be proven. Escher was a Dutch artist celebrated for works where staircases defy gravity, or two hands sketching each other into existence or monks endlessly climbing an impossible staircase. His art is about recursion, infinity, symmetry & self-reference. Bach was one of our greatest composers. His masterpieces, built astonishing musical complexity from simple themes using repetition, inversion & variation. The writer articulates that three of them look diverse and come from different fields but were exploring the same principle: recursion, self-reference and the emergence of complexity from simple rules. That insight became the book in in 1979 But seems you got more interested in the “Incompleteness theorem “?? Why is it Incomplete? For centuries, mathematicians believed they could build a perfect logical system capable of proving every mathematical truth. Godel proved that this dream was impossible.He constructed a mathematical statement that says: 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 Now we face an impossible dilemma. * If system proves the statement, the system contradicts itself. * If it cannot prove the statement, then the statement is true but forever unprovable within that system. read again... For me, this is also a lesson about AI. No matter how advanced AI models become, every system will have intrinsic limitations and cannot answer all questions. The rest of the book expands this insight deeper. Escher makes self-reference visible through impossible worlds.Bach makes recursion audible through music. Hofstadter then weaves mathematics, art, music, philosophy, psychology, computer science and cognitive science into a single argument: Intelligence is not computation. It emerges through recursion, abstraction, analogy, pattern recognition & the ability of a system to represent itself….a concept he calls the “strange loop.” GEB reminds us that our deepest questions have not changed and even the largest AI model may not be able to answer : A) How does meaning emerge from symbols? B) How does consciousness emerge from matter? The answer is what keeps the Question alive or is it vice- versa. ……… Weekend is yours. Question it.
