🚀 Today, I am incredibly proud to share that our latest collaborative research, "Modelling sustainable travel behaviour towards digital services: a machine learning-based framework," is officially published and live in the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) - Transport [Indexing: SCIE & Scopus (Q2) | CiteScore (2025): 3.4 | SJR (2025): 0.319 | SNIP (2025): 0.539]. Here is the unvarnished reality of what we uncovered when analyzing mode-shift behavior across two major Indian metropolitan areas: The Baseline vs. The Future: We pitted traditional multinomial logit models against advanced machine learning techniques to predict how commuters respond to digitally enabled multimodal transport. The 84% Hard Truth: A deep learning model completely shattered the baseline, achieving an 84% predictive accuracy. It proved that traditional models struggle to capture the complex, hidden patterns in how humans actually choose to travel. The Practical Impact: Through factorial scenario simulations, we proved that isolated "quick fixes" are failing. To significantly drive down car dependence, cities need a combined strike: seamless ticketing, real-time multimodal platforms, and robust first- and last-mile connectivity working together. Tackling this level of predictive modeling requires an immense amount of rigorous, collaborative groundwork. Massive credit belongs to our lead author, Rupam Sam, for driving this analytical architecture, and to our supervisor, Prof. (Dr.) Sudip Kumar Roy, for his relentless guidance throughout our work at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur. The smart city paradigm requires evidence-based mobility solutions, and we finally have the AI-driven frameworks to prove it. The complete, peer-reviewed paper is officially on the record.
