Polystyrene (PS) has a proven track record in both safety and recyclability. For more than 50 years, polystyrene has been used in food-contact applications in compliance with U.S. FDA regulations and European regulatory requirements, including those established by EFSA. It continues to be widely used in highly regulated sectors such as food service and healthcare, where hygiene, consistency, and product protection are essential. PS is also recyclable through both mechanical recycling and advanced recycling technologies. Its molecular structure enables efficient identification and sorting, supporting high-purity recycling streams and helping advance circular solutions. Recent findings from The State of Polystyrene Circularity in North America, released by the Polystyrene Recycling Alliance (PSRA) and supported by independent third-party research from Resource Recycling Systems (RRS), reinforce an important reality: polystyrene recycling is not an aspiration, it is a functioning system supported by commercial recycling infrastructure and proven recycling technologies.
