It’s rare to see such strong alignment across the health sector on a policy issue. We were encouraged to see this unity reflected in a joint letter to the Prime Minister, signed by respected advocacy groups across private health insurance, the medical sector and senior Australians, highlighting widespread concern about the proposed cut to the private health insurance rebate for Australians aged 65 and over. At St Lukes, we share these concerns – and so do our members. In facts Australians of all generations have expressed a lack of support and concern about the proposed measures. If implemented, this legislation would represent a significant withdrawal of government support for our members who rely on private health insurance to access care as they age. Our recent survey of more than 3,600 older Tasmanians highlights what’s at stake: 96% are worried about the impact, 71% say it would affect their ability to keep cover, and 90% lack confidence they could rely on the public system alone. Many of our members have paid premiums for decades. Now, just as their health needs increase, they’re being told to pay more or walk away. We are continuing to advocate on their behalf, alongside the coalition of health industry groups, in urging Government to reconsider the proposed rebate reduction. If you have concerns, we encourage you to share your views directly with your local federal politician.
