This week’s Friends of Peter (FOP) conversation, guided by Peter Strople, invited me to think more deeply about Identity. What emerged is a distinction that has become important to me: Self is given. Identity is witnessed. Your Self is the inward Human, present before explanation, achievement, reputation, Role, or Society’s naming. Identity is not merely what you call yourself, and it is not merely what others call you. Identity is the coherence by which the Self becomes visible before God, Conscience, Role, Community, and Time. Society matters, but Society is not the first Witness. You are known before you are named. You are witnessed before you are seen. You are accountable before you are applauded. Identity is not the name you defend.
