Seafood is an integral part of Singaporean and Asian culture. However, by 2050, all seafood, including fish, might become a rare delicacy. As our oceans warm and marine life dwindles, tropical countries are expected to see a 40% decline in potential catches. On the 8th of June, World Ocean Day was celebrated globally, uniting and rallying youth leaders and organisations to protect and restore our blue planet. As Singapore's first Blue Economy social enterprise and 2024 SL25 winner, the Ocean Purpose Project turns ocean waste into real solutions — from converting marine plastics into hydrogen fuel and carbon nanotubes, to growing seaweed bioplastics as an alternative to single-use plastics. As of 2024, their Plastic to Fuel initiative has already recycled 352.7 kg of marine plastic waste into hydrogen fuel, protecting our coasts one clean-up at a time.
