Kerala’s Christian history is older and stranger than the usual colonial narrative allows. Long before European rule, the Saint Thomas Christian community had already developed its own churches, liturgy, trade networks, landholding families and political influence. Within that memory survives the tradition of Villarvattom—a small Christian principality said to have been ruled by a king named Thomas. The historical evidence is debated, and it should not be inflated into the story of a vast Christian empire. But the tradition matters because it reveals something deeper: Christianity in Kerala was not originally experienced only as a foreign missionary religion. It became rooted in Malayalam society, connected to local aristocracy, royal courts and the Indian Ocean world. Kerala’s Christians were not simply waiting for Europe to arrive.
