CEO and Founder at The Very Good Bra

Eight years ago, we launched on Kickstarter. Today, it feels like the world is finally catching up. For nearly a decade, we've been making the case for clean, healthy, plastic-free clothing. In the last four months, something has shifted. The conversation around synthetic textiles, microplastics and what we put next to our skin has exploded, and suddenly we're the ones being asked the questions rather than having to explain ourselves from scratch. On a day when the UK is bracing for record June temperatures, it feels like the right moment to pause and reflect, because the link between synthetic clothing and environmental damage is real, and it matters. Eight years is a long time to build something from nothing. Here's what I know now that I didn't then: 1. Manufacturing a product is really running a business. Design is only the beginning. Everything downstream, suppliers, factories, logistics, compliance, cash flow, is the actual job. 2. Getting here at all is a monumental achievement. We've just had our most successful year ever, up over 60%. I don't say that to boast. I say it because it took eight years of not stopping and several of going backwards. 3. Community is everything for a micro-business. It can be a very solitary road. The people who show up matter enormously. 4. Exceptional humans make all the difference. When you find the right ones to work alongside, the whole thing gets lighter. 5. Health is the only non-negotiable. I've been largely absent from LinkedIn for eight months following a major family health event that turned my world upside down, and continues to. Life has a way of reordering your priorities without asking permission. I'm humbled and grateful we're still here. Still plastic-free. And more relevant than ever. Massive thanks to all who've been with me on the journey, there are too many to mention but you know who you are πŸ™πŸ» #PlasticFree #SustainableFashion #CleanClothing #FounderLife @eliselockwoodphoto
