Operational excellence is rarely the result of technology alone. In the energy industry, we often focus on equipment, processes and technical solutions. Yet, in my experience, the biggest differentiator between average and high-performing operations is leadership. The best operations I have seen were not necessarily the best equipped. They were the best led. Strong operational leaders create clarity in uncertain environments. They align teams around common objectives. They make decisions with incomplete information. They develop people and build accountability. Most importantly, they create a culture where safety, execution and continuous improvement become everyone's responsibility. Across Africa's growing energy sector, significant investments are being made in infrastructure, equipment and technology. The same level of investment must be made in operational leadership.
