#Paper alert: Turning biowaste into high-performing biofuel (biobutanol): is it commercially feasible ? What are the process and context conditions ? A joint study by Department of Chemical Engineering (VUB) and Centre for Environment, Economy and Energy (Brussels School of Governance, VUB) explores the #technoeconomic potential of producing #biobutanol from biological municipal solid waste (BSMW) through #sequential #adsorptive #separation. 🔬 Key Results: - sequential adsorptive separation shows better overall economic performance than conventional distillation,  -  with 16% lower capital investment and 29% higher internal rate of return -  sensitivity analysis identifies butanol selling price and electricity price as the most influential economic parameters  - especially under European utility-cost conditions 📖 Read the full paper here (free for the next 50 days): https://lnkd.in/eXsTScsV 📌 The most important message: • Biobutanol production from BMSW using sequential adsorptive separation shows strong potential as a #costeffective #waste-to-#bioenergy solution • #Scaling up requires further pilot-scale demonstration and stronger integration of source-separated organic waste supply chains • #Electricity pricing is a critical driver of economic performance • Targeted #policy support to lower electricity costs for green fuel production is essential to unlock commercial deployment Let's rethink waste – not as an endpoint, but as a resource for sustainable fuels. 🤝 This crosscenter collaboration proves that combining process engineering with energy‑environmental systems thinking generates actionable insights for the circular bioeconomy. 🙏 Congratulations on the entire team – Prof. Keikhosro Karimi, Dr. Marzieh Shafiei, PhD, Prof. Joeri Denayer (VUB ChemEng) and Dr. Stijn Van Der Perre, Tomas Wyns (C3E) – for this impactful work. #vub #stepchem #sustainable #chemicals #production #processengineering #separationtechnologies #technoeconomics #policymaking #Biobutanol #MunicipalSolidWaste #TechnoEconomicAnalysis #CircularEconomy #Biofuels #VUB #C3E #WasteToEnergy #AdsorptiveSeparation FACT - VUB #Flanders #Alliance #Climate #Technologies CAPTURE #Resources #Recovery #Circularity
