South Africa's youth unemployment challenge has many causes. One of the most persistent is a cycle that qualified young people know all too well: you can't get hired without experience, and you can't get experience without being hired. Stellenbosch University's Campus Health Service, in partnership with Boland College, has launched an 18-month medical receptionist internship programme designed to break that cycle. Qualified candidates gain practical workplace experience inside SU's health clinics while strengthening the administrative capacity of those facilities at the same time. For the first three interns, Ezile Sokuto, Chamell Johnson and Kofito, the programme represents more than a foot in the door. It represents a career trajectory that the job market had, until now, made very difficult to access. It's a reminder that institutions have a role to play in closing the gap between qualification and opportunity, not just through what they teach, but through who they choose to give a chance to.
