The colors of hydrogen. At Stegra, we are building a hydrogen plant where 37 electrolyzers will produce the green hydrogen needed for near-zero emission steel production. But what makes hydrogen green? Hydrogen itself is a colorless gas, but the way it is produced is often described using colors, each with a different emissions profile. Here are some examples ↓ ● Black hydrogen – produced from coal. ● Grey hydrogen – produced from natural gas (methane). ● Blue hydrogen – produced from natural gas (methane) with carbon capture and storage (CCS). ● Turquoise hydrogen – produced from methane through pyrolysis. ● Pink hydrogen – produced through water electrolysis powered by nuclear energy. ● Green hydrogen – produced through water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity.
