🚨 People in Gary urge Nippon Steel to invest in clean production Relining a coal-based blast furnace at Gary is “a step backwards” that will prolong air pollution problems among local communities and jeopardise jobs, the Chicago Tribune reports. Local residents hope the company’s USD 3.1 billion investment in Gary will be used for a transformation to cleaner steelmaking, such as direct reduction (DRI) technologies. In Osceola, Arkansas, United States Steel Corporation plans to construct a new direct-reduction facility at its state-of-the-art Big River steelworks. A U. S. Steel spokesperson said: “... installing this iron-purifying technique in Gary would be too risky and expensive”. No wonder Gary residents feel they’re getting left behind by modernisation. The home of American steel deserves sustainable investment for the future, not penny pinching. The new owner, Nippon Steel Corporation, has an opportunity to build a new future for Gary. It just needs to speed up and scale up its green investment for the future of communities and the climate.
