Michael Sanford founder of Bunyarra, understands this better than most. At 21, while working at Tarong Power Station, Michael suffered a series of seizures that changed his life overnight. Sustaining injuries that prevented him from returning to the tools, his mental health declined – and like many men he saw around him, he stayed silent.  What changed his path was one honest conversation. Encouraged by his partner, now his wife, choosing to speak up became a turning point for Michael. That moment went on to shape Bunyarra, the mental health support service he founded in 2009. Built on lived experience and a strong sense of community, Bunyarra’s first engagement was right back at Stanwell’s Tarong Power Station. Today it supports people across Queensland, nationally and internationally. At its core is a simple idea: make support visible, accessible and built on trust, no matter how remote your location.
