HILLBILLY ELEGY NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE That’s Glenn Close below, in full protective mode, as Mamaw, the formidable grandmother and, in effect, heroine of J. D. Vance’s account of his escape from a dysfunctional family life in rural Kentucky. The movie has received mixed reviews so far — I haven’t seen it — but the book was a 2016 bestseller. I had mixed feelings about the book, as you can see in the linked review that I wrote right after the book came out. The early years are vividly and often movingly recounted; the post-high school years are thin and unspecific, and disappointingly unreflective, with the effect that connections between the early and more mature lives are not established. In light of Vance’s educational achievements this loss of focus and interest is surprising and anti climactic.
