Quant Research Intern @ WorldQuant | DDP CS & MATH @ NUS
As I was returning my laptop yesterday, it finally hit me that my eight months as a Quantitative Strategist Intern within the Private Equity Team at GIC have officially come to a close. Wrapping up this experience feels bittersweet. People often question why I chose to intern here for so long. The answer is incredibly simple: When you are tackling creative challenges while surronded by exceptional people, the months pass in the blink of an eye. Conventionally, when someone says they are working as a quant, people typically picture them working exclusively in public markets. But stepping into the private markets, and PE in particular, demands a completely different level of creativity. You have to be highly inventive and adaptable in how you structure data and approach quantitative strategy. My primary takeaway from this experience is the deep Private Equity business domain knowledge I gained along the way. Understanding the reasoning behind the data and learning the intricacies of the PE landscape has shaped my approach to data analysis. Instead of just analyzing raw numbers, I am now able to step back, understand the bigger picture, and paint a compelling story with the data. This perspective has been invaluable in helping me bridge the gap between complex data models and the fundamental nature of private equity. Reflecting on my time with the Private Equity Team, what stands out the most is the incredible individuals I have had the privilege to meet. One of the most remarkable things about GIC is its genuinely open culture. Despite the scale of the firm, everyone I interacted with was incredibly approachable. Whether it was discussing the nuances of a project or seeking career advice, colleagues and leaders were always willing to share their time and insights. No question I asked ever felt too small. I want to give a special shoutout to the PE Strats team. I am grateful for the constant support and the great memories. Because everyone brought a different background to the table, I learned a tremendous amount simply through the conversations and interactions we had. Hearing those diverse perspectives was a highlight of my experience. It has been an incredible journey of growth, both technically and professionally. Thank you to my manager and colleagues in the PE team for an unforgettable internship. I look forward to crossing paths again in the future!
