How did a professor build a billion-dollar battery company? Stanford professor Yi Cui invented silicon nanowire technology that doubles the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, making electric vehicles more practical by extending their range. The 2007 breakthrough caught the attention of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who visited Cui's Stanford lab to discuss the technology.  “Usually, it takes the founders – the inventors – really strong faith to say, ‘I believe this is so important,’” said Cui in Episode 4 of the Stanford Ecopreneurship Podcast. Cui went on to found Amprius Technologies, Inc., which went public in 2022, and several other cleantech companies including air filtration startup 4C Air. In conversation with host Sam McClure, Cui discusses what makes a great CEO, managing a 40-person research lab while running multiple companies, and his current roles leading Stanford Ecopreneurship and the Stanford Sustainability Accelerator.
