As part of Earth Week 🌎, we’re sharing stories that highlight how sustainability, culture, and community come together on the Hilltop. 🌱 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dU3ihMRs On the east side of campus, a 14,500-square-foot “food forest” is growing through a partnership between St. Edward’s University and the Central Texas Cherokee Township. Here, students help cultivate heirloom corn, beans, and squash using the Cherokee “Three Sisters” farming method — a traditional approach that supports soil health, conserves water, and sustains biodiversity. For students like Agatha Ais ’27, the experience is both personal and transformative, “Even though my country is thousands of miles away, the corn here reminds me of home… Working in the food forest has been a way to connect with my homeland while also feeding my curiosity about a new culture.” Through hands-on learning, cultural exchange, and shared stewardship of the land, students are engaging in a living model of sustainability rooted in respect, reciprocity, and relationship. As one Cherokee Township advisor shared, “We are truly caring for each other through the land.” This Earth Week feature reflects the many ways environmental stewardship at St. Edward’s is deeply connected to community and culture 🌿 #EarthWeek #Sustainability #FoodSystems
