🎉 Congratulations to the winners of the Space Data Lab Hackathon on the theme Future Crisis Management! Team Total Digital – Hanna Swedenklef, Johan Daniels, Rebecka Zettmarker, Christian Säldebring, and Saeid Aminjafari – took first place with their solution: 👉 BUMPS - Baseline for Unmonitored Municipal PavementS Recognizing that many Swedish roads struggle to meet condition requirements and that large parts of the network remain unmonitored, this team set out to rethink how road condition data is collected. Rather than relying on traditional manual inspection, they combined multiple data sources, satellite imagery, land-surface temperature, elevation, soil, and climate, to train an AI model capable of predicting road condition across unmonitored roads. The result is a scalable solution that provides a more complete picture of the road network, with traffic-flow data identified as a promising next step to further improve performance. Their contribution stood out for: ✅ Combining multiple relevant data sources ✅ Applying AI to address a real-world challenge ✅ Tackling an important societal issue ✅ Delivering a solution with broad practical applicability ✅ Demonstrating strong potential for scaling and wider adoption As climate-related events, infrastructure challenges, and societal disruptions become increasingly complex, innovative approaches to crisis preparedness and resilience are more important than ever. This project shows how data, AI, and cross-sector collaboration can help turn information into actionable insights. A special thank you to Oskar Jonsson, Innovation Officer at the Swedish Government Environmental Protection Agency, and Carina Aspenberg, SVP and Head of Corporate Communication at SSC Space, for presenting the award and sharing the jury's reflections. We also extend our gratitude to all jury members for their valuable contributions throughout the competition. The winning team is rewarded with a visit to SSC Space in Solna, where they will tour the facilities, visit the space laboratory, and hear from leading Swedish space experts, concluding with a joint lunch. The future of crisis management will be built on collaboration, innovation, and data-driven decision-making, and this hackathon demonstrated exactly that. The Space Data Lab is the research and innovation engine behind Digital Earth Sweden, developing methods, tools, and pilot projects to make space data more accessible and useful.
