📣 When talent isn’t enough… and referral becomes the gatekeeper. It hits hard when you don’t get an opportunity not because you weren’t capable, not because you didn’t work hard, but simply because you didn’t have someone to refer you. As a first-generation law student, I’ve realized that merit alone often isn’t the currency that opens doors in the legal world. Sometimes it’s connections. Sometimes it’s privilege. And sometimes, it’s just luck. But what about those of us who have none of these? We still show up. We still send that 50th internship email. We still walk into court, untrained but hopeful. We still draft, file, and research often unpaid. We still sit in silence when gaslighted, because “that’s how the system is.” But let me say this, to every struggling law student, every intern who was never acknowledged, and every young legal mind who’s ever felt invisible: We are not alone. And we are not powerless. Because we walk a path once walked by many greats who had no Godfather in law: 🧑‍⚖️ Justice N.V. Ramana – A son of a farmer who rose to become Chief Justice of India. ⚖️ Adv. Karuna Nundy – A first-gen lawyer and constitutional law expert making global impact. ⚖️ Adv. Rebecca John – One of India’s top criminal lawyers, who started without a legal legacy. ⚖️ Adv. Gopal Sankaranarayanan – A brilliant mind from a non-legal background shaping jurisprudence. ⚖️ Adv. Jhuma Sen, Adv. Vrinda Grover, Adv. Namita Wahi – all first-gen, all fearless. They remind us that while we may start at a disadvantage, we don’t have to stay there. We will break in. We will rise. And we will change this space. To all law firms, senior advocates, and professionals reading this 👉 Please Start valuing potential, not just pedigree. 👉 Please Create space for merit, not just referrals. Because the future of law should not be limited to those born into it. #FirstGenerationLawyer #LawStudentJourney #LegalFraternity #InternshipStruggles #MeritMatters #LegalProfession #LinkedInLawyers #ReferralCulture #PayYourInterns #LawCommunity #VoicesForChange #LawWithoutPrivilege
