Karim has never really felt at home anywhere. After 18 years in Berlin, he says this may be where he’s felt it least. He loves that feeling. Not everyone is looking for the same kind of arrival. Some people find belonging in fragments: in a language, on a street, in a memory. None of it has to add up to home. Meet Karim Aïnouz (@karimainouz), Brazilian film director, Cannes winner, and Golden Bear competitor at this year’s Berlinale with Rosebush Pruning. His films, including Madame Satã and Praia do Futuro, move through queerness, family, and the idea of belonging. Living abroad changed what he could imagine on screen, including subjects, characters, and stories he says he may never have found had he stayed in Brazil. He is less drawn to settling than to being in transit. We’re Späti Stories, a free newsletter and community celebrating the people who make Berlin extraordinary.
