A Significant Milestone for Soweto's Future Development On 2 June 2026, the City of Johannesburg's municipal entity, Joburg Property Company (JPC), officially handed over the 30.5-hectare Soweto Gateway Development Site to Calliper (Pty) Ltd, marking the transition from planning to implementation of this catalytic mixed-use development. Strategically located along Chris Hani Road, adjacent to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and the Soweto Empowerment Zone (SEZ), the development is set to become a transformative economic and social hub for Soweto and the broader Johannesburg region. The development will incorporate: -Residential developments -Retail facilities -Commercial spaces -Educational facilities -Medical facilities -Light industrial zones Supported through a 50-year long-term development lease and sale model, this public-private partnership initiative is designed to stimulate investment, create sustainable employment opportunities, and promote local economic growth. Importantly, the City of Johannesburg, JPC, and Ward 24 Councillor Siyakudumisa Makaula have reaffirmed their commitment to meaningful community participation, ensuring that local residents, entrepreneurs, and businesses benefit from the opportunities created throughout the project's lifecycle.
