With rising interest rates and grocery prices, many Australians are feeling the strain at the checkout. So how can we cut food costs without compromising nutrition? Southern Cross lecturer and Accredited Practising Dietitian, Dr Emily Burch explains that small changes can go a long way, from planning meals around specials to stretching ingredients. It’s not just about spending less, but making smarter choices that support both health and budget. At the same time, improving access to affordable, nutritious food remains a broader challenge. Around 3.5 million Australian households experienced food insecurity in the past year. So, while individual households can make small tweaks to save at the checkout, we also need broader policy action to reduce the cost of healthy foods and support household incomes.
