Women and girls collectively spend an estimated 250 million hours every day collecting water, hours diverted from education, income generation, and rest. (Source: UNICEF, USA) The burden is deeply gendered. According to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Report on WASH (2023), women and girls aged 15 and older are primarily responsible for water collection in 7 out of 10 households without water on-premises. We call on policymakers to recognise that climate adaptation and water infrastructure investments are gender equality investments. The two cannot be separated.
