At SOFIAA Health, our core principle is simple: you cannot understand data unless you understand the people behind it. This isn’t a nice‑to‑have. It is essential to interpreting the texture, quirks, and hidden signals that never reveal themselves from behind the proverbial ivory tower. As scientists, we recognise the importance of large datasets and the impossibility of knowing every individual represented in the numbers. But we also believe in deep, representative understanding of the cohorts we serve. It is only by speaking to real women, listening to their lived experiences and being physically present in their communities that we can interpret nuances accurately and stay awake to emerging insights. This is why SOFIAA Health’s CEO, Dr Jacqueline Koay, insists that our team is embedded in the local communities where we run our pilot programmes - not as observers, but as active participants. We sit in the location, we are familiar faces in the community centres and we lunch at the community cafe LifeAfterHummus. Understanding context is not an academic exercise; it is a responsibility. Because meaningful health innovation begins not with data points, but with people. Photo: the local food bank in Somers Town opening for business early on a Friday morning.
