Thermal stimulation is emerging as a promising method to enhance long-term well integrity by accelerating the formation of annular shale creep barriers. 🔧 This study shows that, within an optimal temperature window (up to ~200–300°C), heating can significantly improve sealing and self-healing properties without damaging the formation. By enabling faster, more reliable barrier development, without requiring annular access, this approach offers a practical pathway to strengthen well integrity across the full lifecycle, including plugging and abandonment.
