Every frame of BBC Sport's 2018 World Cup campaign is physically embroidered, not animated. The film required 650 individual fabric panels and more than 227,000 meters of thread, with each frame first mapped digitally before being stitched at a scaled-up embroidery studio working around the clock through a three and a half week production window. The result, running at 12.5 frames per second, folds football folklore including Maradona, Zidane and Gascoigne into a single unbroken tapestry alongside 2018 favorites Ronaldo, Messi and Kane. BBC Creative built the concept around the idea that history matters more than any single result, and extended it into a 7-meter physical tapestry later exhibited at Manchester's National Football Museum and Moscow's Tsaritsyno Museum.
