❓ We asked Akshay Deshpande, Technical Sales Flat Product Furnaces at SMS: What is exactly the function of a high temperature roller hearth furnace? ➡️ The plates are austenitized in an indirect-fired roller hearth furnace with an inert gas atmosphere. With this atmosphere the plates can be heated up avoiding a scale formation at the surface. For the heating process, modern low-NOx, self- recuperative burners are used for energy-efficient operation with minimal emissions. Depending on the furnace configuration, an electrical heating option can be used to eliminate furnace emissions, supporting customers in their green steel ambitions. As shown in the video, the plates pass through the furnace in a specific transportation mode. That is what enables excellent temperature uniformity across the entire plate, regardless of its length. All these features make the results particularly relevant for normalizing and for preparing the plate conditions needed for quenching in the MultiFlex-Quench®.
