𝗔𝘀 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀? On Georgia’s west coast in Central Asia, the route connecting Poti, Batumi and the Turkish border is a key trade and transit corridor, linking the country’s major Black Sea ports, international border crossings, and popular coastal centres. Delivered through complex mountain terrain, the 14.3km controlled-access bypass includes: • five tunnels • nine bridges • seven viaducts • nine overpasses • 57 culverts • four interchanges Completed in 2024, the project’s success lies not simply in adding capacity, but in rethinking how the network functions. By separating freight, tourist and local traffic movements, the bypass has improved safety, reduced congestion and strengthened connectivity along one of Georgia’s most important economic corridors. Importantly, it has eased pressure on the city’s urban network without simply shifting congestion into surrounding areas. As Technical Advisor, SMEC provided design review and construction supervision, supporting delivery through challenging geotechnical conditions while managing risks associated with tunnels, steep slopes, weak soils and populated areas near tunnel portals. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: • Significant reductions in congestion across the existing road. • Improved road safety outcomes. • Faster and more reliable travel along a key east–west corridor. Projects like Batumi Bypass do more than move traffic. They reshape how a city functions unlocking long-term mobility, economic and community benefits.
