Can RNA-based crop protection control plant disease without disrupting the beneficial microbes that support plant health? A new study by Poorva Sundararajan, Ramesh Vetukuri, Bekele Gelena, Mukesh Dubey, Aakash Chawade and colleagues suggests it can. RNA sprays targeting potato late blight had minimal impact on the leaf microbiome, while the disease itself caused far greater changes in microbial communities. The results indicate that RNA-based approaches may offer highly targeted disease control with limited effects on non-target microbes, adding to growing evidence of their potential as more precise and sustainable crop protection tools.
