Back in 2016, Sieben Energy Associates demonstrated something that has only become more relevant with time: 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴—𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨. Working with Transwestern at Chicago's iconic Citigroup Center, a 43-story, 1.86 million-square-foot office tower, Sieben Energy Associates implemented a monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) program 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝗸𝘆𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝘆'𝘀 𝗦𝗸𝘆𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸® 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀. The results were impressive:  • Nearly 2 million kWh in energy reductions  • Approximately $112,000 in projected annual energy cost savings  • Seven energy reduction measures implemented  • Dozens of HVAC operating anomalies identified and corrected before they became costly problems  • Improved Energy Star performance and reduced Energy Use Intensity (EUI) What stands out nearly a decade later is how forward-thinking this project was. In 2016, monitoring-based commissioning was still emerging as a best practice. Today, continuous commissioning, fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), and analytics-driven operations are becoming essential tools for organizations seeking to reduce energy costs, improve sustainability performance, and maintain occupant comfort. In 2018, Sieben Energy Associates joined AECOM, bringing its Chicago team and expertise into AECOM's energy consulting practice. Founder Craig Sieben has continued advancing the data-driven building performance principles that helped make projects like this successful.
