Over the past few months, we’ve been hard at work with our partners Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and Ipsos, contributing to TRAILS - Enabling data analytics for actions tackling skills shortages and mismatch. Together, we’ve finalized major deliverables that dive deep into the future of work and the evolving labor market across Europe. We've developed a report titled “Rethinking Basic Skills for a Changing World", proposing a framework for the multidimensional skills – such as decision-making, digital, green, and social competencies – which are needed to remain resilient throughout the digital and green transitions. 🔹 Key Finding: Technical digital literacies are the strongest predictors of whether a worker can adapt to new job demands and avoid being replaced by automation. Financial and sustainability-related skills correlate with improved household resilience. 🔹 The "Skill Ecosystem": These skills don't exist in isolation; they cluster together, and deficits in one area often point to broader structural inequalities. Additionally, there are significant demographic and cross-country disparities. 🔹 Our Method: We used an ISCO-ESCO mapping to translate individual job titles into a standard European skills language, allowing us to measure the digital and "green" intensity of different occupations. 🔹 Why it Matters: In our rapidly changing economy, traditional literacy is no longer enough to ensure someone stays employed or financially stable. This framework helps policymakers move past narrow definitions of "basic skills" to focus on the high-level decision-making abilities that truly drive economic resilience and social participation.
