Europe is at a defining moment – tackling climate change, strengthening energy security, and sustaining competitiveness all at once. Large-scale electrification is fundamental to addressing all three, yet the components that make it possible are too often overlooked.   We're therefore proud to be among the signatories of this position paper on increasing RD&I in electric power system components in Europe: 📄https://lnkd.in/ex7fbXSD   The paper argues that without significantly increasing targeted RD&I investment in electric power system components, Europe risks slowing down the energy transition – becoming increasingly exposed to supply shocks, technological dependencies, and geopolitical risks.   Two of the EU research projects we lead show what this investment looks like in practice. Scarlet project is developing superconducting cables that use 90% less copper and a fraction of the footprint of conventional cables. MISSION - Horizon Europe project is developing #SF6-free switchgear components for AC and DC grids, eliminating a greenhouse gas 24 300 times worse than CO2.   More is needed. Europe must significantly increase targeted RD&I investment in electric power system components to secure its electrified future. 🖊️ Signatories 🖊️ CurrENT Europe - EERA - The European Energy Research Alliance - ENEA - #ETIPSNET - Europacable - Ganz Transformers and Electric Rotating Machines Plc. - Transformadores Gedelsa S.A. - Heimdall Power - Hitachi - INESC TEC - Institute of Power Engineering - National Research Institute - Institut für Regelungs- und Steuerungssysteme (IRS) - Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) - Kyte Powertech - Magtech AS - Nexans - NKT - Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) - Ormazabal - Renewables Grid Initiative - Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico - RSE SpA - Siemens Energy - SINTEF - Statnett SF - SuperGrid Institute - T&D Europe - TECNALIA Research & Innovation
