AI is disrupting the world at an unprecedented pace. How do we keep up with such rapid change? The answer isn’t more tech or more policies. It lies deeper – in our values. That was the message from our Chancellor, Mdm Halimah Yacob, at the Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Lecture Series at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). As industries transform and jobs evolve, staying relevant is no longer just about picking up new skills. It’s about developing the judgement, adaptability and sense of responsibility to navigate change with confidence. Drawing on Singapore’s experience, she highlighted the importance of strong institutions, lifelong learning and responsible innovation, not just to respond to disruption, but to shape it. She said, “Innovation cannot stand alone. It must rest on the foundations of integrity, fairness and discipline. Progress that is not grounded in values may achieve short-term gains, but it cannot sustain long-term trust.” The visit also marks a step forward in strengthening ties between SUSS and UniMAP, opening up more opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange in shaping education that serves society.
