As generative AI reshapes how students learn and produce work, the challenge for universities is not only how to detect misuse — but how to design assessments that deepen understanding. In a commentary for Inside Higher Ed, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Associate Dean (Education) Matthew Hammerton and Assistant Professor of Sociology Jacqueline Ho from the SMU School of Social Sciences argue that the take-home essay does not need to be abandoned. Instead, they propose pairing take-home essays with short oral assessments, where students demonstrate that they can explain, defend and take intellectual responsibility for their own written work. Their perspective shifts the conversation from surveillance to learning: how can educators preserve the value of deep thinking, written argument and independent inquiry in an AI-enabled world? Explore how oral assessments can help safeguard academic integrity while keeping human dialogue at the heart of university education: https://bit.ly/4wGDEXh #SGSMU #SGSMUSOSS #ThoughtLeadership #HigherEducation #ArtificialIntelligence #AcademicIntegrity #FutureOfLearning #MeaningfulImpact
