Singapore is getting a new #SyntheticBiology lab that will advance innovation in sustainable products, helping companies that produce chemicals, materials, and ingredients to move quickly from R&D to commercialisation. The lab, jointly established by A*STAR Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (SIFBI) and the National University of Singapore (NUS), will initially focus on nutrition and consumer care, with broader applications spanning advanced materials and health. Jay Keasling, professor at the University of California, Berkeley, will lead the lab as Lead Principal Investigator in its work to: ⚪ Reduce development cycles from years to weeks through AI-guided enzyme and pathway engineering capabilities. ⚪ Produce complex molecules at scale via an industrially deployable fungal host system free of intellectual property. ⚪ Generate novel molecules — compounds found in clinically important drugs and functional ingredients — through fungal systems. The global #bioeconomy is transforming industries, with the green chemicals market set to reach US$230b by 2030. Building on SIFBI and NUS’ existing expertise in bio-process development and scale-up, the lab will strengthen Singapore’s industrial biotechnology capabilities, while equipping #Singapore’s future scientists and engineers with the skills to operate across industry and research settings.
