Finding your first graduate job in Australia as an international student without PR is brutal. You’re not just competing with local students. You’re up against a system designed to filter you out. No PR? Straight to the rejection pile. And yet, some make it through. Here’s how: Forget online applications You’re wasting your time. ATS filters aren’t built for you. Most graduate portals auto-reject non-citizens. Get aggressive with networking Cold email hiring managers. Message alumni on LinkedIn. Attend meetups. Make awkward introductions. The job will come from a person, not a portal. Find the hidden doors Look for companies that sponsor. Many startups don’t care about PR if you can deliver. Some mid-sized firms quietly sponsor too, if the team likes you. Tailor your pitch Your resume means nothing unless it screams value. Be crystal clear about how you can help, and why hiring you is a smart risk. Play the long game You might not get a grad role immediately. Intern. Contract. Freelance. Just get in. Once you’re in, you’re in. Most grads give up. They take the first rejection as proof they don’t belong. They’re wrong. The system isn’t fair. So outsmart it.
