Ardian committed €3bn to expand Verne's Nordic data centre platform from 110MW to over 660MW across Norway and Denmark by 2029. The capital allocation is the simpler half of what happens next. Bloomberg reported on 29 June that the investment will be made through Ardian's $20bn Fund VI. Gonzague Boutry, Ardian's head of digital infrastructure for Europe, said: "We believe AI has enormous opportunities and prospects. That's why we're scaling up Verne, expanding it to become a pan-Nordic or even Northern European data centre platform." The 2015-2021 data centre CEO managed a single campus and renewed contracts on a predictable cycle. The 2026 platform CEO runs an active capex programme across multiple countries against a demand curve that does not wait for planning consents. Dominic Ward, Verne's CEO, described it in March as "entering a more technically demanding phase of growth" where "operational discipline becomes a strategic differentiator." Verne's response was to appoint Wayne Louw as COO from NTT Global Data Centers to lead multi-site operations at scale. His brief: "disciplined execution at scale." Building 560MW of new capacity across two Nordic countries in three years requires three capabilities that rarely coexist in one executive: industrial-scale capex programme management across three jurisdictions; hyperscaler commercial credibility to sign anchor agreements with Microsoft or Amazon Web Services (AWS) before ground is broken; and capital discipline aligned to a fund return requirement. The market produces infrastructure operators from one of two directions: real estate backgrounds (strong on build, weaker on hyperscaler relationships) or cloud backgrounds (strong on commercial, limited construction experience). The executives who hold all three are uncommon. At HMN Capital, we are running more digital infrastructure leadership mandates where the brief explicitly combines capex programme ownership, hyperscaler relationship depth, and multi-jurisdiction operational experience. The job title rarely captures the scope. Happy to share what a well-structured CEO or COO brief looks like for a PE-backed data centre platform at this stage of scale. #DigitalInfrastructure #DataCentres #PrivateEquity #ExecutiveSearch #EuropeanPE #GreenInfrastructure #AIInfrastructure #COO #CEO #OperationalLeadership #HMNCapital
