In 1842 vroeg de Children’s Employment Commission aan de jonge Charles Dickens om een pamflet te schrijven over kinderarbeid om de publieke opinie te beïnvloeden. Charles schreef geen pamflet maar 'A Christmas Carol.' Na zijn bezoek aan de tin mijnen van Cornwall begreep Dickens dat hij iets meer powerful nodig had dan een rationeel betoog. Zoals Walt Disney al zei: “We have to entertain in order to educate, because the other way round doesn’t work.” I have to work without a light and I’m scared. I go at 4 and sometimes half past 3 in the morning and come out at 5…I never go to sleep. Sometimes I sing when I’ve light, but not in the dark; I dare not sing then.
