Before new technologies can be applied offshore, however, they first need to be thoroughly tested. The L-flange is a proven connection technology, and ongoing innovations continue to extend its lifetime and application for larger wind turbines. At the same time, the C1 Wedge connection is gaining interest within the monopile design community as a potential successor for future, larger turbines. Following extensive discussions with Siemens Gamesa and C1 Connections, Euskal Forging Group and Sif will now jointly assess the manufacturability of the C1 Wedge connection. A test ring has already been forged at Euskal Forgingโs new facility in Sestao and will be machined after the summer holiday period. Sif will then weld the connection to a tubular section and evaluate the behaviour of the flange during the welding process. By the end of the year, Euskal Forging and Sif expect to have further strengthened their knowledge of the manufacturability and welding behaviour of the C1 Wedge connection.
