Where does the word “bearing” come from? Few people know this, but the term bearing is said to come from Jonathan T. Bear, an English engineer active in the late 19th century. In 1883, Mr. Bear founded Bear Engineering Co., a small workshop near Birmingham that produced support rings for rotating axles used in textile looms. His design — a hardened steel sleeve with a machined internal surface — quickly gained popularity in early industrial machinery.
