💬 “HuMSub addresses a long-standing limitation of microbiome research. By distinguishing subspecies within the same species and linking these differences to functional and disease-related traits, the approach enables more precise biological interpretation of microbiome data.” A gut microbiome resource at the subspecies level is one of the #SIBRemarkableOutputs 2025. It joins the annual list of remarkable contributions from SIB Members across Switzerland to the field of #bioinformatics. This work was led by Matija Trickovic and Silas Kieser, together with Evgeny Zdobnov and Mirko Trajkovski, within the teams of SIB Group Leaders Evgeny M. Zdobnov and Evgenia Kriventseva at the University of Geneva and the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. This resource provides the first comprehensive genomic catalogue of human gut microbes at subspecies level, capturing genetic variation within species that standard analyses miss. Using HuMSub profiles, machine-learning models predicted colorectal cancer from stool samples more accurately than species-level approaches. 👉 Discover this shortlist of outstanding works: https://lnkd.in/eE_8PbK3 🥇 SIB Awards Committee: Laurent Falquet (Chair), Maria Anisimova, Luciano Cascione, Janna Hastings, Robert Ivánek, Frederique Lisacek, Charlotte Soneson, Robert Waterhouse, Monique Zahn The SIB Remarkable Outputs gather on a shortlist the most outstanding works produced by SIB members each year.
