Most people interpret what others say. Linguists interpret what others say, what they might mean, what they intentionally left unsaid, what the context suggests, and what alternative interpretations are possible. A simple sentence is rarely just a sentence anymore. What changes? • You start noticing ambiguity everywhere. A casual message can have multiple readings. • A pause in a conversation becomes meaningful. A choice between two seemingly similar words suddenly reveals intent, emotion, or social positioning. • You become more aware of how tone, context, culture, and shared knowledge influence meaning. But isn’t everyone already doing this? Absolutely. Human communication naturally relies on inference, context, and assumptions. We are all constantly reading between the lines. The difference is that for linguists, the process becomes impossible to switch off.
