Sharing this piece we published yesterday, co-authored with our colleague Biyuan Hu . The idea came from a recent NetForHer hotline request. The survivor told us that her case had already been filed as a criminal case, but the police had not actively sought evidence from X. The reason she was given was: “We have no law enforcement authority over overseas platforms, so we cannot investigate.” As a result, the case is now facing difficulties moving forward to the procuratorate. This is also a common barrier we have identified in supporting survivors of TFGBV: when the evidence is on an overseas platform, survivors are often told that there is nothing the police can do. So we wrote this article to offer one possible response: when the police say “overseas platforms are beyond our reach,” what can survivors say, and what legal basis can they point to?
