Understanding UK GPA Classes (For Master’s Applicants) If you’re applying to the UK for your master’s, you’ll notice something confusing immediately - the UK doesn’t use GPA like the US or India. Instead, universities follow a degree classification system, and knowing where you stand can make or break your application. Here’s the simplest breakdown 👇 UK Undergraduate Degree Classifications First Class (1st) - 70% and above Equivalent to roughly a 3.7-4.0 GPA. Top-tier. Competitive for Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Imperial. Upper Second Class (2:1) - 60-69% Equivalent to 3.3–3.6 GPA. This is the minimum requirement for most UK master’s programs. Lower Second Class (2:2) - 50-59% Equivalent to 2.7–3.2 GPA. Accepted for select universities and programs. Third Class (3rd) — 40–49% Equivalent to 2.0–2.6 GPA. Why this matters for your application Most UK universities will ask for: (1)2:1 for competitive programs OR (2) 2:2 for mid-tier/university-specific courses (in few cases even a 3.0 on US scale is accepted under this. It will depend on the university you graduated from and where you are applying for further studies) If your GPA or percentage doesn’t directly map, don’t panic - UK schools evaluate profiles holistically, and your SOP, experience, and recommendation letters can offset borderline grades (in few cases if profile is exceptional) If you want help converting your GPA or understanding where you stand, send me your score - I’ll break it down for you.
