This #PatientExperienceWeek, we had the privilege of sitting down with Stacey McKeown, Program Coordinator in SHN's Education Department, to talk about the incredible work happening behind the scenes to support our learners in developing their skills while making a positive impact on patient care. Stacey explains that supporting our learners is about more than just logistics. It’s about fostering relationships with patients, encouraging critical thinking, and empowering them to bring fresh perspectives to the table. “When a learner is involved in a patient’s care, it’s like having an extra set of eyes, more questions asked, and a thoughtful, thorough approach to the treatment plan,” explains Stacey. “Learners bring the latest medical knowledge and often have more time to spend with patients – listening to concerns, asking detailed questions, and providing compassionate care.” Patients benefit from the energy and curiosity that learners bring to each interaction. Stacey notes, "Patients often feel they’re being cared for by an entire team – a learner and their supervisors. This collaborative approach creates a unique, multi-layered experience that enriches the care they receive.” By having medical learners involved in their care, patients aren’t just helping to shape the next generation of healthcare professionals—they are actively contributing to a stronger, more compassionate healthcare system in Scarborough. Thank you to all the patients who play a role in this process! Together, we’re building a future of care that prioritizes excellence and empathy. #HealthcareEducation #MedicalEducation #FutureOfHealthcare SHNEducation
